Catawba Medical Foundation Recognizes Women In Philanthropy

HICKORY, NC –Catawba Medical Foundation recognizes the commitment and contribution of Women in Philanthropy, a group of women formed with the idea of combining their giving power to bring about more substantial change. Mary Lee Miltier and Donna Wright volunteered to join the Steering Committee and currently serve as Co-Chairs of the Women In Philanthropy initiative at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

“As a group, we have elected to come together to benefit Catawba Valley Medical Center and its various programs and services,” says Miltier. “In October, 2007, we conducted our inaugural meeting where we heard from Amanda Fisher of the Morton Plant Mease Healthcare System in Clearwater, Florida. She shared experiences of what women have accomplished since forming a Women In Philanthropy initiative in 2001.”

Women in Philanthropy meet four times each year. “We hear various proposals from the Administration of Catawba Valley Medical Center in the spring, then vote to distribute our collective gifts at the fall meeting,” says Miltier. Recent donations from Women in Philanthropy include the following:

  • $10,000 to provide a smooth surface sports court/play area at the Healthy House, Catawba Valley Medical Center’s childhood obesity initiative
  • $3,400 to provide a vanity, make-up mirror, wigs, and caps to Details Salon, the new home for the American Cancer Society’s Wig Bank
  • $3,000 to install a patient lift for obese patients
  • $2,400 to help partially fund a resource book for cancer patients developed by Catawba Valley Medical Center, The American Cancer Society, and other organizations The next Women In Philanthropy meeting is June 8, 2011.
