Learn About Developing a Benefits Package that Improves Recruiting and Retention

HICKORY, NC – October 21, 2015 – Catawba Medical Foundation (CMF), the philanthropic arm of Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC), will hold its bi-annual Business and Health Council Wednesday, October 28 at 4:30 pm in AHEC 112 on CVMC’s campus located at 810 Fairgrove Church Road in Hickory. The event is an educational and interactive opportunity for community business leaders to consider solutions that address healthcare aspects and employee benefits with panel discussions about developing a rich benefits package.

“With healthcare and employee benefits as our topic of discussion, we have lined up four panelists and an afternoon that is sure to offer lively discussion,” said Guy Guarino, CMF Chief Development Officer. “Come join the conversation and listen to professional perspectives on the dynamic role benefits play in attracting and retaining staff.”

The CVMC Business and Health Council is a partnership between Catawba Medical Foundation and local business leaders that provides networking opportunities for collaboration on important trending healthcare topics. The event panelists planned for Wednesday are as follows:

Josh Walker, Transportation Insight, Vice President, Organizational Development

An avid distance runner, Josh Walker knows that one must set many small goals along the way in order to achieve ultimate success. Josh and his team maintain our familial culture, making Transportation Insight a great place not only to have a job, but also to make a career. Josh previously held key positions as Controller of The Systems Depot and Manager of Capital Projects at Cardinal Health Oral Technologies, and has also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hickory Christian Academy. Josh knows what it means to deliver results with excellence outside of the workplace as well. As the head coach of Hickory Christian Academy’s soccer program for nearly 10 years, his teams have earned a National Championship and four State Titles. Josh earned his BS in Finance from Bob Jones University and his MBA from the University of Tampa. Josh is a devoted family man for his wife and three children.

Ken Johnson, JD, Stanley, Hunt, DuPree, & Rhine, a Division of BB&T Insurance Services, Inc., Senior Vice-President/Practice Leader, ERISA & Employee Benefit Compliance

Ken Johnson joined Stanley Hunt DuPree & Rhine/BB&T Insurance Services, Inc. in 2015 as the Practice Leader for ERISA and Employee Benefit Compliance. Ken has over 30 years of employee benefit experience. For approximately 15 years he was a director in the law firm of Tuggle Duggins P.A. in Greensboro, NC working exclusively in the area of employee benefits. For welfare benefits Ken worked with insured plans, self-funded plans, Section 125 plans (cafeteria plans), flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs). Ken counseled employers and plan administrators regarding ACA, COBRA and HIPAA compliance in addition to other reporting and disclosure requirements under ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code. Ken handled employee benefit issues relating mergers and acquisitions including plan terminations, plan mergers and plan spin-offs. Ken returned home to North Carolina in 1999 after practicing in Washington, D.C. for 15 years. His prior experience includes several years supervising an eight-attorney employee benefits litigation practice group for the United Mine Workers of America Health and Retirement Funds as well as working in private practice representing multiemployer pension and welfare plans.

Steve Bull, MSPA, MAAA, FCA, EA, Stanley, Hunt, DuPree, & Rhine, a Division of BB&T Insurance Services, Inc., Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary for Retirement

Steve’s experience with retirement benefits has included qualified and non-qualified retirement plans, along with other post-employment benefits since 1983. He has provided clients with effective solutions to manage plan costs by coordinating benefits, funding and investment polices with plan sponsor objectives. Steve advises clients as Chief Actuary of the Consulting and Actuarial Services department. He utilizes new technology along with our Associates’ innovative and creative ideas to enhance service delivery and reduce the cost of benefits administration. Steve helps clients provide employee benefits in a cost effective manner while coping with government legislation. He designs and administers non-qualified retirement plans used as an executive compensation and retention tool. Steve has been invited to present pension and retirement topics at meetings held by various Human Resource and Finance professional associations. Steve is a graduate of the University of Michigan Mathematics and Actuarial Science Program.

Phyllis Johnston, CVMC, Vice President Human Resources

Phyllis has served in Human Resources at CVMC since 1990 and was promoted to Director Human Resource in January 1995 before being promoted to Vice President in July 2013. Phyllis has administrative responsibilities for Human Resources; Organizational Learning; Payroll and Volunteer Services. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Gardner-Webb University. Phyllis’ previous experience includes a number of senior leadership positions where she was responsible for human resources functions at Gardner-Webb University, Coker College, Erskine College and Sacred Heart College. Phyllis is active in the Hickory community with current or prior involvement with the American Society of Healthcare Human Resources Association; Society of Human Resources Management; North Carolina Association of Healthcare Human Resources Association; Catawba Valley Society Human Resources Management; and the Catawba Valley Human Resources Association. As a member of the Catawba Valley YMCA Corporate Board for over 13 years, Phyllis has experience serving as its Personnel Committee Chair and Board Secretary. She is also a current board member of the Western Piedmont Workforce Development Board.
