Bob Finds The Strength to Battle Cancer

Bob’s goals became a little different after he retired from a long, challenging career in furniture and sales. He became more involved in his church, started reading more books and began helping children learn to read.

In 2017, his decision to visit Israel that would change his life forever, exploring biblical history and being exposed to vastly different cultures a world away. Bob returned home thankful for the simple things in his life, especially his love of books and volunteering to help Oakwood Elementary School students with reading.

Amid his changing lifestyle and newfound activities, however, Bob experienced a different kind of change. When Dr. Douglas Eller revealed he had prostate cancer in 2018, Bob was initially shocked and not sure what to expect. He had never been hospitalized before, but he was fortunate to have a physician and care team that kept him informed and encouraged as he began his battle with cancer.

“Catawba Valley Medical Center’s cancer treatment staff was professional and eager to ensure they would be there for me as I focused on my treatment,” said Bob. “Nurses like Jamie, Joyce and Emily made me feel like I was not just another patient. They were so attentive and laughed and joked with me. It really put me at ease.”

After taking a short break from volunteering during his treatment, Bob returned to his students at Oakwood. It warmed his heart as the kids hugged him and enthusiastically asked, “Will you be helping me with my reading today, Mr. Kapellusch?” He’s thrilled to be back making a difference for children like little Isabella, who has learned English as a second language.

“This entire experience has really challenged me,” said Bob. “The trust I have in Catawba Valley Medical Center’s cancer care team has helped to provide me with confidence and stability throughout this difficult time.”
