So you’ve made the commitment to lose weight in the new year, but
you’re not quite sure where to start? CVMC can help.
Talk with your health care provider.Weight control, diet and physical activity may not be addressed during
a general office visit, so have questions prepared. For example:
- What is a healthy weight for me?
- Do I need to lose weight?
- How much weight should I lose?
- Could my extra weight be caused by a health problem or by a medicine I
am taking?
Also ask if they recommend a specific weight loss program or if you are
eligible for weight loss surgery.
If your doctor thinks you are a candidate and you’re interested in
weight loss surgery, we encourage you to attend a free information seminar
to learn more about the CVMC Surgical Weight Management Program. You’ll meet members of the bariatric program team as they walk you
through the details of the weight loss surgery and the lifestyle changes
necessary for success. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity
to ask questions and hear honest answers from our experts.
Think about your decision to lose weight as a long-term, overall change
in your health. Successful weight loss requires a long-term commitment to making healthy
changes in your eating and exercise habits. Physical activity is an important
factor in maintaining weight loss and offers many health benefits such
as improving your mood, strengthening your cardiovascular system and reducing
your risk of heart disease. Not currently a member of a gym? Our medically
– based fitness center,
Fitness Plus, provides the resources, motivation and support you need to change your
life through
healthy eating and
exercise with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, warm exercise pool, group classes
and personal training.
Make sure you look for a safe and effective weight-loss program that includes:
- Healthy eating guides that reduce calories, but do not forbid specific
foods or food groups
- A workout plan with tips to increase moderate-intensity physical activity
- A long-term strategy for keeping the weight off
- Ongoing feedback, monitoring, and support
-
Slow and steady weight-loss (Depending on your starting weight, experts recommend losing weight at a
rate of 1/2 to 2 lbs per week.)
If you are interested in finding a weight-loss program near you, ask your
healthcare provider for a referral. Visit CVMC online to find out more about
