Most bariatric surgery patients are successful with losing and maintaining
their weight loss long-term.
CVMC offers an accredited Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center sanctioned
by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic
and Bariatric Surgery. The program offers three different types of surgery
– Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy and Adjustable Gastric Band.
All of these are considered major surgeries and require candidates to
complete an established protocol prior to having weight loss surgery.
Libby Shaver MSN, RN, CBN, CVMC Bariatric Surgery Navigator states, “Weight
Loss Surgery is not the easy way out. It is just a tool. Patients still
have to change unhealthy eating habits and commit to a more active lifestyle
to enjoy long-term results. “Continued weight loss relies upon a
patient’s desire and dedication to change their lifestyle with a
proactive approach. Family and/or peer support greatly enhances the ability
to make these changes. The improvement in health conditions often propels
patients toward their weight loss goals. Once these goals are reached,
a good support system is essential to help during the maintenance phase.
Libby says “For the right candidates, weight loss surgery is a lifesaving
step. Most of our patients keep at least 50% of their excess weight off
after 5 years following surgery and have improvement or resolution of
pre-operative health conditions and enjoy a better quality of life.”
CVMC’s program features the following elements to help ensure long-term
success after surgery:
- Comprehensive care coordinated by a registered nurse
- Individualized education before and after surgery by a nurse and dietitian
- Monthly support group meetings and an online support group
- Long-term management, support and follow-up care
